Our take

This large LEGO box suits kids who are ready for regular-size bricks and want open-ended building rather than one fixed model. It is also a good base collection for families starting out.

It comes with a wide range of colors, plus special pieces like windows, doors, wheels and eyes, along with idea booklets for inspiration. The bricks are compatible with every other LEGO set, so it keeps its value as a collection grows, and LEGO bricks hold up for years.

The pieces are small, so it is not suitable for toddlers who still put things in their mouths; LEGO DUPLO is the better fit there. It does not include step-by-step instructions for big builds, which some kids prefer. Storage bins help keep the pieces from taking over a room.
